We are fortunate indeed to live in the center of the fastest growing area in the state known as the Upstate of South Carolina. Here in Anderson County, we offer business and industry of all types and sizes, a high quality of life, excellent and growing school system, fantastic weather, a famous lake, Lake Hartwell, offering virtually every water sport, beautiful homes for every taste and budget, and so much more.
Anderson also offers retail outlets, new and old, of every kind, new and improved recreational venues, hundreds of great restaurants and lodging facilities, state of the art health care, and award-winning downtown in the midst of a multi-million improvement plan, new roads and bypasses, and over $1 billion in new and expanding industrial base facilities just in the last two years.
Conveniently located on I-85 in Upstate South, Anderson County is home to more than 190,000 with the City of Anderson being its largest municipality. Other municipalities include Belton, Honea Path, Iva, Pelzer, Pendleton, Starr, West Pelzer, and Williamston. Two unincorporated areas – Powdersville and Piedmont – are among the fastest growing communities in the area.
With nearly 1.4 million residents in the Upstate, close proximity to several major hubs, including Greenville, SC; the Port of Charleston, SC; Charlotte, NC and Atlanta, GA; and minutes from the Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport. Anderson County is the location of choice in South Carolina, the Southeast Region and the country. In 2013 and 2014, Anderson County experienced a record number of capital investments. Our county is a wonderful example of how a community of our size can accomplish so much by working together. Through the efforts of the Anderson County Economic Development, Innovate Anderson, the City of Anderson, Anderson County, the Anderson Area Chamber of Commerce and many of the leaders of our outlaying township has been made throughout the county over the past four years.
The Anderson County Office of Economic Development provides industry expertise and economic resources to both large corporations and growing companies interested in locating or expanding their business in Anderson County. They serve as an advocate to simplify the process of working with the County of Anderson through assisting corporations in finding commercial land, buildings and office space as well as connecting companies with Anderson County business and community leaders. Through the leadership of the director, Burriss Nelson, and his team, the department has ushered in many new businesses and industries. Some of these industries include Michelin North America, McLaughlin Body Company, SMF, Lollis Metals, Watson Engineering, First Quality Tissue, E&I Engineering and many more.
Downtown Anderson When you visit our unique shops and savor our delicious food downtown, look up, look down and art will find you. Anderson is the 2013 winner of the prestigious ELIZABETH O’NEILL VERNER AWARD, the Governor’s Award for Art. From the painstakingly accurate sculpture of William Church Whitner on the square to the witty epigrams in the sidewalk, the City has wholly embraced public art as a featured amenity of its Downtown. Look for the life-sized bronzed wrens in the eaves of the historic buildings and see them gathered at the fountain on the corner of Main and John Street. The City of Anderson became home to Carolina Wren Park in 2014. Located in the heart of downtown on East Whitner Street, the site is a lively venue for concerts and parties as well as a peaceful day retreat. The green amphitheater with low stone walls to sit on creates a delightful venue for planned events and spontaneous family outings. Home to “The Block Party” from April to October, thousands enjoy the park while listening to local bands. Children frolic in the interactive splash pad fountain as the multi-use facility lends itself to a wide variety of activities for people of all ages. Wren Pavilion, located inside the park, is host to formal gatherings while the tables and chairs on the opposite site offer a spot for al fresco dinning with a view. The park recently started offering ice skating for the public in the winter.
In addition to this showcase Downtown, the City boasts 14 parks including the newly renovated 100 year-old Linley Park. A gateway to welcome visitors to Anderson featuring beautiful landscaping and walking trails, this park is located on Murray Avenue.
Anderson University continues to welcome record freshman classes, reflecting a trend in increasing popularity unlike at any time in the school’s history. In fact, Anderson University is the fasted growing private university in South Carolina over the past 11 years. To accommodate the growth, in the past seven years AU has constructed a new library, five new residence halls, and a state-of-the-art School of Nursing which opened in 2012. Once housed on some 68 acres in the Boulevard Historic District in Anderson, AU now boasts 271 acres and continues to expand to accommodate its increasing popularity with the nation’s top high school graduates.
Recently, the university broke ground on a new $15 million Student Center and Dining Commons and construction is already underway at the AU Athletic Campus for a new softball stadium, recreational swimming pool and tennis center.
The Anderson County Library System is in the business of providing the resources and information needed by the county residents, young and old, to explore the unknown, further their education, and develop new skills. With a Main Library, eight branch libraries, a Mobile Library, and a virtual library of eBooks, eAudiobooks, magazines, and business reference, education, and language databases, it is the county’s testament to the importance a library represents in its business and education fabric.
Effective partnerships drive the library’s business, from providing material in a variety of formats from the finest distributors and a consortium of libraries throughout South Carolina to help people find jobs through the state’s SC WorkLink. Residents can come together in one of the system’s many meeting rooms to discuss community issues, watch films, sew together a quilt, learn CPR, and more. A trained professional staff designs informative and entertaining programming for adults, children, tweens, and teens. Computer classes range from learning basic skills to creating spreadsheets. For over 50 years the Anderson County Library System has joined the area’s businesses and schools in being the center of this vibrant county’s growth and development and is poised to do so for another 50 years.
Tri-County Technical College, a public two-year community and technical college with campuses in Anderson, Oconee, and Pickens counties, plays an important role in preparing a technically skilled workforce for advanced manufacturing companies in the region. The College recently opened a state-of-the-art Industrial Technology Center in Sandy Springs, as well as a QuickJobs Training Center on its Anderson Campus located on Michelin Boulevard. In addition, the Pendleton-based College has a full-service community campus in Anderson that provides a convenient location for local companies and individuals to take advantage of university transfer and career education in the immediate area.
