Let's Talk Anderson Anderson Area Newcomer's Guide
Leadership & Community Anderson, South Carolina
To lead your community is to know your community!
From programs like Leadership Anderson, to the many non-profit organizations within the community, to service projects that increase the quality of life in the area, Anderson County is haven for community-minded leadership.
The Anderson Area Chamber of Commerce has lobbied on behalf of the entire community to make sure that the economic viability of the area is primed for sustainable growth. Comparing the community to the holiday activity of trick-or-treating, one usually doesn’t allow their child to knock on the door of a house with no Halloween decorations – especially if the lights are off!

This was the idea behind the Anderson Area Chamber pushing to get the major exits of Interstate 85 both lighted and landscaped. The organization also lobbied to get the interstate expanded to six lanes, opposed to having only four lanes, as people are more likely to frequent or settle in an area that receives more thru-traffic. The expansion also allowed for large industry to become more efficient with their logistics, serving as an infrastructure plus to businesses who have decided to settle in the Anderson Area.
Initiatives like these have been pushed by Anderson area business leaders who see Anderson County as a prime place to live, work and play. It doesn’t just stop with business economy, but includes entertainment and other quality of life aspects.
Leadership Anderson is a leadership development program facilitated by the Anderson Area Chamber of Commerce to inform a corps of committed and qualified individuals about the Anderson community’s past, present, and future, as well as its problems, challenges and future direction. By taking an intensive look into the issues affecting Anderson County, Leadership Anderson prepares and motivates participants to provide quality, dynamic leadership within the area. Beginning in 1984, the program has graduated over 700 men and women to assume positions of leadership in the community.

Alumni from Leadership Anderson, which includes over 700 business men and women since 1983, have led projects that have enhanced the community, solved problems and created sources of entertainment. One example is the Downtown Block party, originally called Downtown Sounds, which hosts live musical entertainment every Thursday between March and October.
In 2014, area business leaders decided to tackle education via a one-cent tax ballot initiative. Not only did the ballot pass, but provided needed income for area schools to tackle problems. These included roofing needs, and the development of a career campus to ensure the proper training for future employees of the many businesses that have located in Anderson County.
Other Leadership Anderson classes have tackled at-risk youth with mentorship programs, revitalized area parks for special needs children, or created career closets and mentoring for youth looking to start their professional careers. Non-profit organizations have formed, including those that deal with socio-economic issues and others that focus on business and education.

Overall, the Anderson community embraces knowing their strengths and history while coming together to find solutions for their weaknesses and needs. It’s not surprising that the population is steadily growing, businesses are locating here, and young professionals are choosing to build a life in Anderson County.

Without the support of our giving residents and businesses, many of these organizations and other services would not be available. We ask you to please contribute and give them a helping hand.
