The popular Science and Technology Tour at Woodburn Historic House will be offered on Saturday, Oct. 27. The tour begins at 10AM and costs $3 per person. This tour is designed to shed light on a number of technological advancements employed at Upstate plantations before the Civil War. Visitors will learn about the technology used at Woodburn during the 1830's - techniques used in ventilation, heating and cooling, food preparation, water collection, insect damage prevention, lightning dispersal, and field drainage.
The tour will provide insight into how people lived before the Civil War, how they functioned in the days before electricity and motorized cars and is a fun and educational activity for families and friends.
Because the architecture of antebellum homes is so inter-twined with the technology they had available, the Science and Technology Tour is being combined with another popular tour.... Architectural Features of Antebellum Homes. This tour highlights the Greek Revival features of the house, architectural changes that have occurred since 1830, and how architecture is used to enhance the limited technology available. Tour guides will use photos taken at Woodburn in the 1880's to enhance the tour.
