Bleckley Inn, Downtown AndersonIn a Women's History Month-themed presentation, Anderson author Kathryn Smith will speak in the persona of Marguerite Alice LeHand, the subject of her biography "The Gatekeeper: Missy LeHand, FDR and the Untold Story of the Partnership that Defined a Presidency." As "Missy," Kathryn will tell you about how a girl from a seedy area of Boston became the first and only woman to serve as White House Chief of Staff. She will also share some of the advances women made in government in the 1930s and 1940s, a period that saw the first woman appointed to the cabinet, Frances Perkins, and the arrival of the first "modern" first lady, Eleanor Roosevelt.
