Franklin Community Players Present: Steel Magnolias
Steel Magnolia's is filled with hilarious repartee and not a few acerbic, but humorously-revealing, verbal collisions. The tight, sharp focus of the play, the fact that all the action takes place in a small-town beauty parlor and at four crucial moments in the lives of the characters over a two and a half year period, helps engage us with the characters and their concerns. The play takes a somber turn in the second act when the gutsy Shelby, a diabetic, risks pregnancy to have a child. The sudden possibility of loss affects the others, revealing grace and grit. Robert Harling's characters have a special quality that makes them truly touching, funny, and marvelously-amiable company in good times and bad - DPS, Inc.
You may be familiar with the movie version of Steel Magnolias created from Robert Harling's 1987 off-Broadway play. The play tells the story of his beloved sister and friend who died from complications of Type I Diabetes. Many of us have family members who have diabetes. Steel Magnolias gives a realistic and poignant look at the reality of Type 1 diabetes for all of us. Please, read and take the literature which will be in the lobby during the show so that you can raise awareness of all aspects of diabetes. For some, this is a preventable disease, and for others who are born with or contract diabetes, many of the long-term complications can be avoided with knowledge and support.
The Franklin Community Players invites you to come see your Franklin, Stephens, and Hart County friends perform in Robert Harling's Steel Magnolias one weekend only, November 20 - 23, Thursday through Saturday at 7:30 pm, and Saturday and Sunday at 2:30 pm.
