U.S. Pro Golf Tour $200,000 Cobb's Glen Classic
Untitled Document Hetford, NC - March 21, 2006: More than 180 professional golfers will be vying for the 36,000 first-place check when the $200,000 Cobb's Glen Classic gets underway May 18-21 in Anderson, South Carolina. The Cobb's Glen Country Club, nestled in the beautiful foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, will be the setting for the U.S. Pro Golf Tour's 2nd of ten events in 2006, leading up to the one-million dollar season-ending Tour Championship in November. The Cobb's Glen Classic will benefit the Rotary Club of Greater Anderson; a member of Rotary International, which has 1.2 million Rotarians worldwide.
Among those holding tour cards with the USPGT are Tommy Gainey and Randall Hunt, who were both featured on the Golf Channel reality show “The Big Break IV." Gainey won the 2005 U.S. Pro Golf Tour's "Tour Championship" in November, edging former PGA and Nationwide Tour professional Kelly Grunewald by one stroke to capture the $50,000 prize. Gainey's 2006 USPGT debut will come in his home state. He's a native of Bishopville, SC. Celebrity players include Greenville's Jose Alvarez, a former pitcher with the Atlanta Braves. Alvarez was named the Brave's Most Valuable Pitcher in 1988. Also on tour are U.S. Olympic swimmer Ed Moses, who won a gold and silver medal at the 2000 Games, former NFL place kickers Al Del Greco and Jim Breech, and Graig Nettles, who has a pair of World Series Championship rings from his 10 seasons with the New York Yankees.
The Cobb's Glen Classic kicks-off on Wednesday, May 17th, with a pairings party for the Celebrity Pro-Am. On Thursday, a celebrity or pro will join each three-person team in the "best ball" format. Also on Thursday, area boys and girls can get tips from the pros in the Cobb's Glen Junior Clinic. It begins at 4pm and is free and open to the public. Friday morning, more than 180 professional golfers tee-off in the $200,000 Cobb's Glen Classic, with the top 72 plus ties making the cut after Saturday's second round. It all leads up to Sunday's dramatic finish and the first place check of $36,000.
The $200,000 Cobb's Glen Classic will also have the added excitement of helping determine which 10 USPGT golfers will be playing in the "Trump Million Dollar Invitational - Presented by TaylorMade," May 21-26, 2006, at the Trump International Golf Club at Raffles Resort on Canouan Island in the Grenadines. The top-ten on the USPGT money list following the event at Cobb's Glen and the season-opening Cypress Creek Invitational in Ruskin, Florida (Tampa, May 4-7) will be exempt from qualifying and fully sponsored into the "Trump Million Dollar Invitational - Presented by TaylorMade."
